Color your Hair with oil pastels D,i,y

This is from before I put pink in my hair.
So I was looking on pinterest and I found this thing that tells you how to do it HERE
you use Oil pastels to temporarily color your hair how cool is that!
You will need...
  • Rubber Gloves. (I didn't use gloves and my hands are fine....)
  • An old t-shirt
  • A spray bottle of water
  • Clips to section your hair
  • soft oil pastels. I don't really know what kind I used. I just used what I had. On the link above they say to use  Rembrandt pastels
  • Some paper  you put your hair on the paper you color it

1.  you dampen  a section of  hair
2. then you put your hair on the paper (the paper should be on a table or a counter)
3. then color it with your pastel witch ever color you like.
4. (I'm adding this one in here) Take a comb and lightly brash the part of your hair you have chalked.

I put the darker colors on the bottom of my hair and the lighter right above them. But you can do what ever you like! I also put some hairspray on it when I was done.

Sorry my hair was all messy. It had been up all day and I just really wanted to try this. I think it would look really cute with curls or waves.

P.s It does take some time to wash out just so you know.

Enjoy!!

  1. Hey,

Just had a question about the process, I just did this tonight and set it with heat from my flat iron, showered about 8 hours later and it came right out! So disappointed, I'm definitely going to have to re-do tomorrow did you use hairspray to set it in? My hair looked so mangled after dragging the oil pastel over it I chose to shower so the ends didn't look ratty and since they said it would last thru 2-3 washes too bad it didn't GRRR I just don't get it!

    1. When I did it to mine my hair was really curly at the ends and when I colored it the curls went a little straight at the ends so I just kinda swirled them around my finger to get them to be curly again. mine was a little hard to get out I still had blue in my hair the day after I showered and I really washed it. I think it's just about the kind you use different kinds do different things. I did put hair spray on it when I was done it really helps hold it all on! I hope this helps if you have anymore questions just let me know! :)

  3. Just wanted to ask do you think that if i did this it would be okay for school?I am not allowed to have colored hair at my school but i wanted to use this for one of my shows and you said it takes a while to wash out so do you think I would be okay?

    1. Is your hair brown like mine? Because when I washed mine most of it came out you couldn't tell I had it in. It was mostly the color green and more the feel of oil pastel's but that could have been the kind I used mine were not soft oil pastels they were just oil pastels....so if you just wash it before you go to school you should be fine (use a nice amount of shampoo though) But I would NOT do it if my hair was blond...

    2. my hair is blonde so would you recomend not doing it?..... im alloewed to have color in my hair at school.... do you know how long it would take to get it out?

    1. I've tryed kool ade too and it didn't work.. The one's I used were just oil pastels And they worked fine I guess you would have to try them to see if they work. My mom always told me that oil pastels stain so when I did it I was wearing and old shirt that I didn't care about just in case.
      Good luck!!

    1. does it still work with blonde hair do you think

      Delete
    2. Yes it does but DON'T use the water because It will stain your hair because adding water to the pure pigment creates a real dye. If you’re okay with the staining for some washes then go ahead. But if your just doing it for the day then don't add water and make sure your using the soft pastels. Have Fun!! :)

  16. Hey everyone you can also twist the hair as you chalk it, In stead of putting it on the paper (You might want to do it over the paper) Enjoy!!

    1. I think it would be fine. I did this the other day when I was babysitting and I needed more pink so I went and got some soft pastels from Shopko for about 8 dollars and they worked great! So I would just give it a try. Good luck!! :)

    1. No it shouldn't, just be careful if you have blond hair! It's real fun! :)

  21. I have found that oil pastel take longer to wash out than soft chalk pastels. Soft chalk pastels generally take only one wash to wash out, and the color looks somewhat dull and dry. But with oil pastels, it may take a few washes to come out, but the color looks a lot brighter and prettier! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Also, if you straighten or curl your hair afterwards this will really lock in the. Odor for the day and keep it from running all over your clothes!

  23. hey so i think this looks perfect to use, my mom doesn't like me coloring my hair so im about to try this underneath one of my layers so she wont see, i have medium brown hair with blonde highlights, but im going to try it on a brown piece, what color/colors should i do? pink, purple, and blue? IDK!! thanks! :)

    1. I'm sorry Stephanie I just got an email that you commented, With dark hair you do need water and you really need to rub it if you want it to be bright just like when you color. When ever I do mine orange and pink show up the best... But I love doing blue and purple they look so good together! I would say if you want those colors try using the brightest ones you have of those colors because with brown hair the darker colors don't show up well. I wish you lot's of luck!! and I hope it works better for you next time!! :)

  27. I have bought a Pentel BRAND Oil Pastel, not Soft pastel. I have read from other website that Oil Pastel can't be used in your hair. Is it really true? I bought this only because I want to use it in my hair, but I'm not sure if it's good. Please enlighten me. Thank you! :D

    1. Omg, I'm not sure but I think those are the first kind I used on my hair I have brown hair (as you can tell from the picture) I read that to from alot of different places but I used them anyways because I already had them at home... They worked for me I have also used the soft and pretty much what's different is one is really harder then the other. so the soft ones come of on your hair so much nicer where as the other ones you really have to rub it (Witch I could see hurting your hair) when I did it to my hair it was late at night so I didn't set it with heat or anything so I don't know what that would do... After I used them both I think the softer ones work better and really you can get the soft ones at Shopko for around $8 I would use the soft ones but if you want to try the ones you have on your hair you can. I used them and all my hair is still here... Oh and the soft ones are easier to wash out. That's all I can think of right now.. Hope this helps :)

  32. Hey so umm, I wanted to temporarily dye my hair because we are not allowed to have dyed hairs in school and I was wondering how long will the colors stay in your hair? Cause I actually have oil pastels here at home and I have black hair but somehow it has auburn-ish shade. I'm asian and I'm from the Philippines. I tried using plain chalks on my hair the one you use with the board and it doesn't stay long. It would really mean a lot to me if you could help. Thanks. :))

  33. Do I have to dampen my hair too?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi wow the Philippines!! That's sooo cool!! Ok umm yess you do need to dampen your hair if it is a dark color. So what you will want to do is... Separate your hair into small sections. Then spray it with water. If doing it on the paper didn't work you can twist your hair then rub the oil pastels on it (do it over the paper) comb it a little to get the extra stuff out. I haven't done this yet (And I probably should have when I did it) You want to set the color with a curling iron or a flat iron. And you really want to use some soft oil Pastels.. They work so much better and show up better too. You don't need to get the ones that cost a lot. The soft oils that I got only cost about $10 and I got a lot of color so.. Yeah I really hope this helps.. I don't know how long it takes to get the color out if you set it but it should just be about I'm guessing 2-4 washes maybe? I was planning on doing my hair like this for new years eve and doing an another (more updated) post on it before the new year. Ahh I don't know what else.. I hope it works!! Good luck! :)

  37. Hey! I love your idea in dying my hair! I'm going to use Maped 'Color PEPS' pastels. I guess its not soft pastels. I think its oil pastels. Is it appropriate for black hair? Very black hair? Is it safe? Do I need to get my hair a little wet before starting to dye my hair? Please answer!
